Moving During Hurricane Season in Tampa Bay
Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 and overlaps with the busiest moving months of the year. You do not need to avoid it. You do need a plan for the week a storm shows up.
When the risk is highest
The season lasts six months, but most Gulf Coast storms arrive between mid-August and late October, with the peak around September 10. A June or July move rarely meets more than afternoon thunderstorms. A September move should have a backup date.
Before you book
- Ask your mover how a storm delay is handled before you pay a deposit
- Avoid putting a closing, a lease end and a move on the same day in peak season
- Leave a day or two between move-out and the date you must be out
- Arrange insurance for the new address early, because insurers pause new policies when a named storm is approaching
Know your evacuation zone
Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties each assign evacuation zones from A to E based on storm surge, and zone A is the first ordered out. Look up the zone for both your old and new address. If either is in zone A or B, a storm warning is more likely to stop your move.
Packing for heat and rain
- Keep documents, medications and electronics with you, not on the truck
- Use plastic bins for garage and closet items
- Have mattresses and upholstered furniture wrapped in plastic
- Put towels and floor protection at both doors
- Book a morning start, since summer storms usually build in the afternoon
If a storm is forecast for move week
- Start watching the forecast five days out
- Call your mover when a watch is issued, not when it becomes a warning
- If either address is ordered to evacuate, the move stops
- Do not leave a loaded truck or container outside through a storm if you can avoid it
- After the storm, confirm power and road access at the new home before rescheduling
