Tampa Moving Checklist: 8 Weeks to Move Day
A move goes wrong in the last week when the first seven were wasted. This is the order to do things in, with the Tampa-specific items that generic checklists leave out.
Eight weeks out
- Set a budget and decide what you will pack yourself
- Get quotes, and ask each mover for a guaranteed price and proof of insurance
- Read recent reviews, not only the star rating
- Start a folder for quotes, receipts and the lease or closing papers
Six weeks out
- Sell, donate or throw out what is not coming
- Book your mover, since end-of-month and summer dates go first
- Reserve the elevator and ask for your building’s or HOA’s move rules
- Collect boxes, tape and packing paper
Four weeks out
- Pack what you do not use daily: books, decor, guest rooms, the garage
- File a change of address with the post office
- Schedule electric, water and internet to start at the new address
- Request school and medical records if you are changing providers
Two weeks out
- Confirm the date, start time and addresses with your mover
- Send your building’s certificate of insurance requirements if it has them
- Arrange care for children and pets on move day
- Use up frozen and perishable food
The final week
- Finish packing everything except daily essentials
- Defrost the freezer a day or two ahead
- Pack one box of first-night items: sheets, towels, chargers, medications
- Confirm keys, gate codes and where the truck will park
Move day
- Walk through the home with the crew lead before loading starts
- Keep documents, jewelry and medications with you
- Do a final sweep of closets, cabinets and the attic
- Take meter readings and photos of the empty home
Tampa-specific items
- Book a morning start from June to September to stay ahead of heat and afternoon storms
- Check both addresses’ hurricane evacuation zones if you move between June and November
- Update your Florida driver license address within 30 days of moving
- Get a SunPass if the new commute uses the Selmon or Veterans expressways
